Helen Maurer at The Venice Glass Week
Saturday 9 to Sunday 17 September 2023
Helen Maurer Looking Out and In Again 2022
Projection: variable dimensions,
Float and diachroic glass, glass fragments and mixed media, LED spotlight and turntable
Danielle Arnaud Venice is pleased to present Helen Maurer's kinetic glass and light installation Looking Out and In Again (2022) at Palazzo Loredan as part of the Venice Glass Week.
The work is inspired by the 'Wardian Case', a glass terrarium invented in 1829 that changed the way plants could be successfully transported from one country to another. As the spot-lit glass house revolves on a turntable, the panes reflect around the room, deconstructing and drifting apart before reconstructing again.
The Venice Glass Week is an international festival founded in 2017 to celebrate, support and promote the art of glassmaking, for which the Lagoon City of Venice has been renowned around the world for over 1,000 years. The seventh edition of the festival will take place from 9th to 17 th September 2023.
The Venice Glass Week is promoted and organised by Comune di Venezia, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, LE STANZE DEL VETRO - Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti and Consorzio Promovetro Murano.
Helen Maurer (based in London) is an artist and educator, working primarily with glass, light and sound to create site-specific installations. In her practice glass acts as a catalyst or 'transformer'. Playful and experimental, Maurer casts light through it, animating it, to discover something new and unexpected. She often uses 'found' or secondhand objects and natural
materials and is interested in illusion and scale, finding ways to create the macro out of the micro. Having spent many years living on a boat, water and reflection are also recurring themes within her practice.
She studied Fine Art and Theatre at Brighton College of Art, Stained Glass at Central Saint Martin's where she was awarded a fellowship, before completing an MA at The Royal College of Art. She is a former Winner of the Jerwood Prize for Applied Arts: Glass; The Glass Sellers Award (highly Commended) and the Bombay Sapphire Prize (short-listed) and was the recipient of Deloitte & Touche student prize for excellence at the RCA.
Her work is represented in private and public collections including The Arts Council of Great Britain and The Crafts Council Collection; The Matt Collection and The Royal Geographical Society.
